The first thing that had to be done was removing the old carpet. The prior owners had big long haired dogs and I knew there was no way we were moving our stuff in there and putting babies down on dirty carpet. First step was tearing out carpet and installing new baseboards. We quickly learned about what builders affectionally call "the devil strip."
It was important to me that my girls would have a "safe place" that they could play and relax, we knew that we would be living in at least 6 months of construction (ended up being much longer than that). So I still wanted a place they could play on the floor, lay our their toys, and walk around barefoot.
"We knew that we would be living in at least 6 MONTHS of construction... ended up being much longer than that!"
This set us in motion with our first marching orders, the three bedrooms.
They needed new paint, baseboards, trim, light fixtures, and carpet. We wanted this portion totally ready before we moved anything in. So when it came time to move out of rental, we piled all of our stuff in either the garage or sunroom so we could work with the blank slate inside. This, of course, meant we couldn't stay there.
So for the first week, we stayed across the street with my parents.
After we would put the girls to bed, we would head over the house and begin painting and preparing to turn it from a house to a home.
